Canadian Ice Hockey Coach Admits Faking COVID Certificate for Olympic Entry

Switzerland to Host World Ice Hockey Championships Amid Controversy Surrounding Coach’s Past Actions

The Swiss Ice Hockey Federation has confirmed that Switzerland will host the upcoming World Championships in May, despite controversy surrounding the team’s coach, Patrick Fischer. In a statement, Fischer admitted to using false documentation to obtain a COVID-19 vaccination certificate, which he claimed was necessary for him to travel to the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Fischer stated that he made a “serious mistake” by using the falsified paperwork and expressed regret for any disappointment caused. He attributed his actions to an “extraordinary personal crisis” at the time, citing concerns about not wanting to be vaccinated while also not wanting to let his team down during the Olympic Games.

According to Swiss public broadcaster SRF, Fischer was fined nearly 39,000 Swiss francs ($50,000) by local authorities in 2023 for document forgery after purchasing the certificate on social media. The incident came to light shortly after Fischer’s admission.

Fischer has been the head coach of the Swiss Ice Hockey team since 2015 and has led the team to several notable achievements, including three Olympic appearances and three silver medals at the World Championship. However, his involvement in this incident has raised questions about his integrity and leadership.

The Swiss Ice Hockey Federation has stated that it considers the matter closed, with Fischer’s departure from the team scheduled for after the upcoming World Championships. The International Olympic Committee has yet to respond to a request for comment on the situation.
