US Senator Bill Cassidy Faces Primary Challenge from Trump-Backed Challenger in Louisiana
Senator Bill Cassidy, a Republican who voted to convict former President Donald Trump in 2021, is facing a primary challenge from US Representative Julia Letlow, who has received backing from the former president. The contest is seen as a test of Trump’s continued influence over the Republican Party.
Cassidy, who joined seven Republicans in voting to convict Trump on charges related to his campaign to overturn the 2020 election results and the January 6, 2021, storming of the US Capitol, has been endorsed by Trump. Letlow, a state treasurer, is also running for the Senate seat.
According to early primary vote data, Cassidy’s endorsement remains influential, despite polls showing Trump’s approval ratings have declined. The winner of the Republican primary is likely to win the general election in Louisiana, a deep-red state.
Cassidy had previously stated that he voted to convict Trump because he believed the former president was guilty. Since leaving office in 2021, Cassidy has walked a fine line between supporting Trump’s policies and distancing himself from some of his more contentious views.
Trump has also backed other candidates in the Senate race, including John Fleming. However, Cassidy remains one of the few Republican senators who voted to convict Trump alongside Collins and Murkowski, who have both escaped major intra-party fallout for their votes.
Cassidy has clashed with the Trump administration on several occasions, including during Robert F Kennedy Jr’s confirmation hearing as health and human services secretary. He later confirmed Kennedy after receiving assurances that he would not change federal vaccine recommendations, despite the HHS under Kennedy later changing those recommendations.
In April of this year, Trump accused Cassidy of tanking his nominee for surgeon-general, Casey Means, who had come under fire for her vaccine scepticism and unproven wellness theories. Cassidy has since claimed Letlow lacks conservative bona fides, highlighting her past support of education diversity initiatives and attendance at the 2023 United Nations climate conference.
