Ceasefire achieves goal of making Gazas situation largely invisible internationally

Gaza Ceasefire Fades from Global Attention as Mass Death Continues

A ceasefire in Gaza announced in October did not bring an end to violence and death. According to reports, over 400 people have been killed by Israeli forces since the announcement. Many others have died due to Israel’s actions, including decimation of the Strip.

As rumours of a ceasefire circulated, some Palestinians expressed hope for a peaceful resolution. However, fears that the calm might be short-lived were confirmed when daily attacks resumed. Despite this, global attention towards Gaza began to wane in November as the public became convinced that the war had ended.

Data suggests that engagement with Gaza-related content decreased on social media and in media outlets during this period. The author of a recent article notes that the real goal of the ceasefire was not to stop violence or protect people but rather to reduce global attention and discussion about Gaza’s situation.

In recent weeks, Israel has continued to violate the ceasefire by carrying out attacks and refusing to comply with its obligations to allow aid trucks into the Strip. The Israeli government has also restricted access to international organizations providing relief to Gazans.

According to reports, a recent bombing campaign killed 104 people on October 28. More recently, an Israeli attack on a refugee camp resulted in the deaths of several members of the Abu Shawish family, including children and elderly relatives. The author’s friend Batoul Abu Shawish is now left to face the ongoing genocide alone.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with widespread destruction, unexploded bombs, floods, hypothermia, starvation, and illness caused by Israel’s actions. Many Gazans are struggling without proper shelter, food, heating, electricity, or potable water. The author notes that winter is itself becoming a deadly force, with 15 people dying from cold weather this month.

International organizations face challenges in providing aid to Gaza due to Israel’s restrictions on access and refusal to comply with its obligations. Palestinian organizations also report a decline in donations, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
