US and Iran Exchange Threats Ahead of Ceasefire Expiration
Tensions between the US and Iran have escalated as a two-week ceasefire is set to expire on Wednesday. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has stated that his country is prepared to take new actions on the battlefield, following a warning from US President Donald Trump.
Trump warned Tehran of “problems like they’ve never seen before” if the ceasefire expires without a deal. In response, Ghalibaf expressed anger at Trump for imposing a siege and violating the ceasefire, stating that Iran will not negotiate under such conditions.
The situation remains uncertain as the second round of US-Iran peace talks scheduled to take place in Pakistan this week is now in limbo due to the US seizure of an Iranian-flagged vessel near the Strait of Hormuz. Al Jazeera’s Tohid Asadi reported from Tehran that there is no official confirmation on whether Iran will participate in the talks, but noted that the country has maintained a willingness to engage in diplomacy.
Trump expressed confidence that Iran would negotiate, stating that if they do not, they will face significant consequences. He also emphasized the importance of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, which he believes could pose a threat to global security.
The ceasefire’s expiration date brings with it several unresolved issues between the two countries, including disputes over the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions, war reparations, ballistic missiles, and regional relations. The talks’ outcome is uncertain, but both sides have made clear that negotiations will be challenging due to their complex demands.
