Chads Lake Chad Region Hit by Boko Haram Attack on Soldiers

Chad Reports Boko Haram Attack on Military Post

At least 23 Chadian soldiers were killed and 26 injured in an attack by the Nigeria-based armed group Boko Haram on a military post in Chad’s Lake Chad region, according to the country’s armed forces. The incident occurred on Monday night on the island of Barka Tolorom.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Chadian military reported that “a significant number” of attackers were killed and the group was repelled. President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno also commented on the attack in a Facebook post, stating that Boko Haram carried out a cowardly attack on their military base at Barka Tolorom.

The president expressed his condolences to the families of those affected by the attack. The Chadian army has faced increased pressure from Boko Haram in recent months, with several attacks reported in the Lake Chad region. In October 2024, an attack killed approximately 40 soldiers in the Chadian army’s ranks. Following this incident, President Deby launched a counteroffensive against Boko Haram.

The conflict in Chad is part of a broader regional instability, marked by recurring rebellions and armed factions. The country has struggled with economic stagnation and a harsh climate, despite possessing significant oil wealth.
