China donates rice to Cuba amidst worsening humanitarian crisis

Cuba Receives First Shipment of Rice from China Amid Ongoing Fuel Blockade

Cuba has announced the arrival of its first shipment of rice, totaling 15,000 tonnes, at the port of Havana. The cargo was part of an expected donation from China, which is valued at around 60,000 tonnes. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel confirmed the delivery in a series of social media posts on Sunday.

Diaz-Canel expressed gratitude to China and members of the European Parliament who have condemned the pressure campaign against his government. He likened Cuba’s situation to “genocide” and thanked those who have shown solidarity with the country.

The United States has increased its sanctions against Cuba since January, as part of a hardline turn under President Donald Trump. The sanctions have largely blocked the export of oil to Cuba, which relies on imports for nearly 60% of its oil supply.

Cuba’s energy minister, Vicente de la O Levy, announced earlier this month that the island had exhausted its oil supplies, leading to widespread blackouts and disruptions in public services. The situation has been exacerbated by a fuel blockade, which has cut off essential supplies.

The Trump administration has continued to impose sanctions on Cuba’s communist government, with some reports suggesting that President Trump may seek regime change. However, negotiations between the two countries are likely to be strained due to ongoing tensions and disputes over human rights issues.

In recent weeks, the US has offered $100m in humanitarian aid to Cuba, but only if the country implements “meaningful reforms”. The situation remains complex, with both sides showing signs of defiance and determination.
