Chinas Economy Benefits from Diverging from US in Middle East Conflict

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz during a phone call with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. According to a Chinese readout of the conversation, Xi stated that maintaining normal passage through the strait is in the best interest of regional countries and the international community.
The statement comes as tensions between Iran and the US have led to a blockade of Iranian ports and a closure of the strait to most marine traffic since February 28. The US launched its naval blockade on April 13, while Iran moved to close the strait following the launch of the war.
In contrast to US President Donald Trump’s statement that he is winning the war and will continue the blockade until a deal is reached with Tehran, Xi’s measured approach has been seen as a pragmatic move by analysts. China has used its relationship with all parties involved in the conflict to present itself as a voice of reason and a more responsible global power.
China’s policy of noninterference in other countries’ internal affairs has allowed it to maintain good relations with Iran, Israel, the US, and Gulf Arab states. The country is Iran’s largest trade partner and buys up to 90% of its oil. China has also cultivated closer ties with Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE.
Analysts say that China’s commitment to nonintervention was a key reason for vetoing a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz earlier this month. Unlike the US, which has a strategic focus on the Middle East, China’s priorities in the region are largely economic. The country is seeking to restore peace and stability in the region, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, as it is essential for its own economic interests.
China has also signed a 25-year comprehensive strategic partnership agreement with Iran in 2021, which highlights its commitment to maintaining good relations with all parties involved in the conflict.
