Chinese Electric Vehicle Exports Reach New Heights
Data compiled by Bloomberg shows that Asia was the largest market for Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) last month, followed by Europe and Latin America. According to customs data, China’s EV exports surged 40 percent in April, reaching a total of 278,081 units.
This marks a significant increase in overseas sales since the start of the year, with a total of 893,852 units exported. The majority of these vehicles were imported by Asia, with 110,613 units received. Europe and Latin America also saw substantial imports, with 83,813 and 52,897 units, respectively.
Other regions, including Oceania and North America, also experienced significant increases in EV imports. Brazil reported the largest rise in demand among top export destinations, with imports increasing by 221 percent to 38,144 units.
Despite efforts by the US and Europe to restrict Chinese EVs from their domestic markets, China’s exports continue to grow. The US applies a 100 percent tariff on Chinese EVs, while the European Union imposes tariffs as high as 35.3 percent. However, these restrictions have not appeared to deter demand for Chinese-made vehicles.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), China is the largest manufacturer of EVs globally, accounting for about 75 percent of global production in 2025. The country’s exports reached a record high of 2.5 million units last year, double the figure from the previous year.
