Chinese Are You Dead? App Renames Itself Amid Widespread Adoption

A New App for People Living Alone Gains Popularity in China

A mobile app designed for individuals with a solitary lifestyle has gained significant attention in China, leading to its global expansion and rebranding. The app, initially called Sileme, translates to “Are you dead?” in English, is intended as a lightweight safety tool for those who choose to live alone.

According to the app’s development team, it requires users to set up one emergency contact and sends automatic notifications if they have not checked in via the app for consecutive days. The app has been downloaded by many users, including those with solo households, which are estimated to be around 200 million in China, according to a recent report.

The company behind the app has announced plans to launch a new version with a global brand name, Demumu, and an 8-yuan payment scheme to help cover increasing costs. The app’s popularity has led to it surging to the top of Apple’s paid app chart this week. Users have expressed mixed reactions to the app, with some appreciating its convenience and others expressing concerns about its purpose.

The company has stated that the new brand name will be adopted in its forthcoming release. The app is now available for download on the App Store at 8 Hong Kong dollars (US$1.03).
