Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick Testifies Before Senate Committee
United States Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick appeared before a Senate committee on Tuesday to address concerns about his connections to Jeffrey Epstein. Newly released emails have shed light on their interactions, which appear to contradict Lutnick’s earlier statements.
Lutnick stated that he “barely knew” Epstein and claimed not to have had any relationship with him. However, the emails suggest that Lutnick may have visited Epstein’s private island for a lunch meeting in 2012 and met on other occasions as well.
During the hearing, lawmakers pressed Lutnick about statements he made on a podcast last year, explaining that he had pledged to “never be in the room with that person ever again” after his initial encounter with Epstein in 2005. Lutnick attributed this decision to Epstein’s behavior at the time, including making sexually suggestive comments about a massage table.
Senator Chris Van Hollen questioned Lutnick’s statements, pointing out the discrepancy between his earlier claims and the newly released emails. Lutnick maintained that nothing “untoward” happened during the 2012 encounter.
The Department of Justice recently released 3 million pages of Epstein-related records, which have raised questions about the administration’s handling of government files related to the financier. Critics have called for increased accountability among those who interacted with Epstein, including Lutnick.
Representatives Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie have both called on Lutnick to resign, citing his contradictory statements and lack of transparency. The issue has sparked debate about the need for greater scrutiny of those involved in Epstein’s crimes and their connections to influential figures.
