Congo Republic holds election with potential to extend Sassous leadership

Presidential Election Set to Extend Denis Sassou Nguesso’s Rule

The Republic of Congo is holding a presidential election on Sunday, with incumbent President Denis Sassou Nguesso seeking re-election for a fifth term. The election has been boycotted by two major political parties due to allegations of unfair electoral practices.

Over 3.2 million Congolese are registered to vote in the election, which will run from 7am to 6pm local time. Polls have shown that turnout is expected to be lower than in previous elections, with some analysts predicting a turnout below 68 percent.

Sassou, who has been in power since 1979, is facing limited opposition, with six little-known candidates competing against him. The incumbent has been the only candidate to campaign across the country, while his opponents have largely remained stationary.

The electoral process is dominated by figures aligned with Sassou’s ruling party, and two of the country’s best-known opposition leaders are currently in prison. Some Congolese believe that change is unlikely, citing a lack of transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

Sassou has campaigned on promises to accelerate development projects and expand access to education and professional training. The economy, which relies heavily on oil exports, has stabilized in recent years after a long period of decline.

The provisional results are expected within 48-72 hours after the polls close.
