A US judge has dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump against the Wall Street Journal and Rupert Murdoch over an article about a letter allegedly written by Trump to financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The lawsuit, which was filed in August 2022, claimed that the WSJ had defamed Trump by publishing the letter without his permission. The letter, which has not been made public, is said to have been written by Trump while he was still president and contains allegations against Murdoch and others.

In a ruling issued on Tuesday, US District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan dismissed the lawsuit, citing that Trump had failed to provide sufficient evidence to support his claims of defamation.

The WSJ has maintained that it did not defame Trump and that the article in question was based on publicly available information.

Murdoch’s company, News Corp, also denied any wrongdoing and stated that it would continue to pursue its own lawsuit against Trump over the alleged libel.

Trump’s lawyers had argued that the WSJ had breached a non-disclosure agreement by publishing the letter without his permission. However, Chutkan ruled that there was insufficient evidence to support this claim.

The judge also noted that Trump had failed to provide any evidence of damages resulting from the publication of the article.

As a result of the dismissal, Trump will have the opportunity to refile his lawsuit if he believes he has sufficient grounds for his claims.
