Two Gaza Residents Cope with Trauma After Israeli Strikes
Abdullah Nattat, 30, and his cousin Diaa Abu Nahl, 30, have both suffered severe injuries in recent years. Abdullah lost both legs above the knee in an air strike in September, while Diaa’s right leg was amputated and his other leg sustained severe injuries.
Abdullah, a singer and performer, had been displaced from his home in Beit Lahiya to central Gaza City due to the Israeli military operation. He recalled walking near the as-Saraya Junction when an air strike hit, causing him to lose consciousness. When he woke up in the hospital, he was told that both legs had been amputated.
Diaa’s story is equally tragic. In July, he was injured in a direct Israeli strike on his family home in Beit Lahiya, killing 22 people, including his wife and two daughters. Diaa’s right leg was amputated, while the other sustained severe injuries that require further surgery.
Both Abdullah and Diaa are receiving physiotherapy sessions to aid their recovery. Despite their traumatic experiences, they have expressed a desire to move forward with their lives. Abdullah has stated that he is not alone in his suffering, as his cousin Diaa also shares the same burden.
The two men have spoken publicly about their experiences, with Abdullah describing the moment of his injury as “extremely harsh and difficult.” Diaa has struggled to come to terms with the loss of his family members, stating that he keeps thinking about how they died while he survived.
