Crane Collapse in Thailand Kills Two, Following Deadly Incident Yesterday

Crane Collapse Occurs in Bangkok Province

A crane collapse occurred in Samut Sakhon province, near Bangkok, on Thursday, resulting in two fatalities and five injuries. The incident involved a crane being used to construct an elevated highway that fell onto the road below.

According to Police Colonel Sitthiporn Kasi, superintendent at the local district police station, the crane was operated by Italian-Thai Development, the same company responsible for a crane collapse in Nakhon Ratchasima province on Wednesday. The latter incident killed 32 people and injured several others.

The accident occurred near the Paris Inn Garden Hotel and sent clouds of dust and rubble across the site. The Rama II Expressway, where the incident took place, has seen multiple fatalities in recent years due to its reputation as a “Death Road”.

Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn stated that 195 passengers were on board a train that was being built along this route as part of a joint Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project. An investigation into the incident has been ordered.

The area where the accident occurred is a heavily populated region in northeast Thailand, and reports indicate that it has been under construction for several years. The high-speed rail project aims to bring a new transportation system above the existing rail line.
