US Indictment of Raul Castro Sparks Tensions with Cuba
A US federal indictment against former Cuban President Raul Castro has heightened tensions between the two countries, with some analysts suggesting a potential military operation could be imminent. The indictment, which dates back to 1996, charges Castro with conspiracy to kill US nationals and four counts of murder.
In response to the escalation, Cuba’s Civil Defence released a multi-page guide titled “The Family Guide for Protection Against Military Aggression.” The guide outlines safety protocols and responsibilities of families in the event of a US attack. Cuba’s defence doctrine, known as the War of All People, envisions resisting foreign invasion through mobilizing the civilian population.
Helen Yaffe, an academic and podcaster who has frequently visited Cuba over the past 30 years, notes that Cuba’s system of national defence against extreme weather events has been praised by international organizations. She also highlights the country’s military preparedness, stating that “everyone in Cuba is trained militarily” and incorporated into the national defence system.
Cuba’s President Miguel Diaz-Canel has stated that any US military action would lead to a “bloodbath.” The Cuban government believes that its military capabilities are better equipped than those of Venezuela. Analysts agree that Cuba presents a distinct challenge due to its better-trained and better-equipped military.
The situation remains tense, with the US having recently increased surveillance flights off Cuba’s coast and issued executive orders declaring the country a “significant threat” to national security. The US has also stated that “Cuba is next.”
