Cuba Rejects Removal of Diaz-Canel in US Diplomatic Talks

Cuba’s Vice Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio has stated that his government is open to negotiations with the US over trade issues. However, he denied any discussions regarding a potential leadership shake-up in Cuba.

At a recent news conference, Fernandez de Cossio emphasized that the Cuban political system is not subject to negotiation or change. He also clarified that the position of President Miguel Diaz-Canel and other officials are not up for discussion with the US.

Reports have suggested that the Trump administration has been seeking the removal of Diaz-Canel from office. However, Fernandez de Cossio’s comments indicate that such a move is not being considered by Cuba.

It is worth noting that Diaz-Canel is the first president in Cuba who is not part of the Castro family since 1976. He serves as both the head of state and the leader of the Communist Party, with terms set to expire in 2028.

The US has imposed various measures on Cuba, including a fuel blockade and steep import taxes, which have had significant economic impacts on the island. The Cuban government has acknowledged talks with the Trump administration to lift the current fuel blockade.

In recent statements, President Donald Trump has expressed interest in leading a “friendly takeover” of Cuba, describing its government as being “in its last moments of life”.
