US President Donald Trump Reiterates Interest in Annexing Greenland
In a statement released on Sunday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen urged US President Donald Trump to refrain from making threats regarding the annexation of Greenland. The comments follow an interview published by The Atlantic magazine, in which Trump expressed his desire for the island nation to become part of the United States.
Trump stated that “We do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defence.” This statement comes after the US bombed Venezuela and overthrew President Nicolas Maduro on Saturday, raising concerns in Denmark about potential repercussions for Greenland, a Danish territory.
Frederiksen emphasized that the US has no right to annex any of the three countries in the Danish Kingdom. She also urged Trump to stop making threats against a historically close ally and another country with clear reservations about being acquired.
The Greenlandic government did not immediately respond to Trump’s latest remarks. The US president has repeatedly called for Greenland to become part of the United States, citing its strategic location and mineral wealth as key reasons.
In recent months, the Trump administration has taken steps to strengthen ties with Greenland, including appointing Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to the island. The appointment was seen as a significant development in the US’s efforts to establish a presence on the island.
The Danish government has expressed its commitment to maintaining its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ambassador Jesper Moeller Soerensen stated that Denmark expects full respect for its borders and emphasized the importance of cooperation with the US on Arctic security issues.
Meanwhile, Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen described a social media post by Katie Miller, wife of Trump’s deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, as “disrespectful.” The post featured an image of Greenland in the colors of the US flag, accompanied by the word “SOON.”
