Denmark to Hold Parliamentary Election on March 24
The office of Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has announced that Denmark will hold a parliamentary election on March 24. The announcement was made on Thursday, coinciding with Frederiksen’s efforts to capitalize on growing public support for her stance against the United States’ plans to take control of Greenland.
The election will determine the composition of the Folketing, Denmark’s unicameral national parliament, which has 179 seats. Of these, 175 are allocated to lawmakers representing Denmark, while two seats each are reserved for politicians from Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
A general election is required every four years, but the prime minister can also call one at any time. The most recent vote took place on November 1, 2022, resulting in a three-party coalition that spans the left-right divide.
Frederiksen, who has led Denmark since mid-2019, currently heads a government comprising the Liberal Party of Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and the Moderates party of Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen. In recent months, Frederiksen has been rallying European leaders against the US’s plans for Greenland, an effort that appears to have bolstered her popularity in light of growing public dissatisfaction with rising living costs and welfare pressures.
The election will mark a significant milestone in Denmark’s political landscape, as voters will choose their representatives for the next four-year term.
