US Congress Faces Funding Deadline for Homeland Security Department
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is at risk of running out of funding next week due to an impasse in Congress over immigration reforms. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has stated that Republican leaders reject the Democratic proposals, calling them “unrealistic and unserious”. The deadline for passing funding legislation for DHS is February 13, after which its programs could be temporarily shut down.
The proposed reforms focus on changes to DHS’s immigration operations, particularly through Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Democrats are seeking modifications to these programs, including increased transparency and accountability measures. The demands include banning face masks worn by immigration agents, requiring them to display identification numbers, and mandating body cameras.
Congress must pass funding legislation for DHS by the deadline or risk shutting down its programs. However, the proposed reforms have sparked opposition from Republican leaders, who argue that they are not feasible. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has expressed surprise at the rejection of the proposals, stating that they prioritize people’s basic rights and safety.
The impasse in Congress has led to a split in funding for DHS, with Democrats separating Homeland Security funding from a spending bill passed earlier this week. Some lawmakers have pushed for separate votes on funding for ICE and CBP, but Republican leaders oppose this approach, citing concerns about defunding certain agencies. The situation remains uncertain, with the deadline for passing funding legislation looming.
