Democrats criticize Trump over Iran war crimes statement

US President’s Easter Sunday Message Sparks Congressional Concerns

Several members of the US Congress have expressed concerns about President Donald Trump’s mental fitness for office following a recent profanity-laden message. The message, posted on Easter Sunday, included a threat to destroy Iran’s civilian infrastructure, which legal experts say would amount to war crimes.

Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari, who is of Iranian descent, has called for invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from the presidency, citing concerns about his mental stability. Other lawmakers, including Democratic Representatives Hakeem Jeffries and Senator Elissa Slotkin, have also condemned the message as “disgusting” and “unhinged.”

Legal experts say that targeting civilian infrastructure would violate international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions. The Pentagon’s Law of War Manual also prohibits such actions.

Senator Bernie Sanders has called on his fellow lawmakers to stop the war, describing Trump’s threat as “the ravings of a dangerous and mentally unbalanced individual.” Senator Jeff Merkley has stated that US military personnel are legally required to refuse orders to commit war crimes.

Iran has remained defiant against Trump’s threats, blocking the Strait of Hormuz to choke off oil supplies globally. The Iranian military has also been firing missiles and drones against Israel and across the region.

The President’s Republican allies have largely stood behind him, with some arguing that any negotiated deal must meet US military and strategic objectives.
