New York Governor Kathy Hochul Announces Release of $77m in Funding for Transportation Project
A new funding package worth $77 million has been released by the federal government for the transportation project connecting New York to its neighboring state of New Jersey. The funds were made available on Tuesday, following a lawsuit filed by the states of New York and New Jersey against the Trump administration.
The release comes after a record-breaking government shutdown in October, during which $18 billion in funding was suspended for the project. The suspension was intended as part of a broader effort to pressure Democrats into complying with Republican demands to end the shutdown.
Governor Hochul appeared at a construction site alongside union leaders on Tuesday to emphasize the importance of securing the remaining funds. “The workers need to know that their job is secure,” she said. “This project must be completed year after year, until it is finished.”
At stake is the Northeast Corridor project, a central component of the Gateway Program, an interstate initiative to expand and renovate aging tunnels between New York and New Jersey. The federal government had pledged billions in support for the project, citing transportation and safety concerns.
The Trump administration has continued to withhold funding despite the release of new funds. In response, the states have announced plans to sue the administration again if the funds are not released. A US district judge ordered the funds to be released earlier this month, requiring reimbursement funds to be paid out to the states.
Union leaders and officials have emphasized the need for continued funding to complete the project. “The existing tunnels are over a hundred years old,” said Gary LaBarbera, union leader. “Their structural integrity has failed.”
