Di Giannantonio claims shortened Catalan MotoGP victory following Marc Marquez crash

Fabio Di Giannantonio Wins Catalan Grand Prix Amid Chaos

The 2024 Catalan Grand Prix was marred by multiple crashes and red flags, resulting in a dramatic conclusion to the event. Fabio Di Giannantonio secured his second MotoGP victory for VR46 Racing, taking the chequered flag after a race that was interrupted twice due to accidents.

Di Giannantonio’s win came at the expense of pole sitter Pedro Acosta, who crashed on the final lap after contact with Ai Ogura. The incident led to a three-second penalty for Ogura. Meanwhile, Honda rider Joan Mir finished second, ahead of Fermin Aldeguer from Gresini Racing.

However, six riders were being investigated for their tyre pressures, leaving the final standings uncertain. Alex Marquez and Johann Zarco were taken to hospital after serious incidents during the race, with both riders conscious but receiving further examination.

The drama began on lap 12 when Acosta’s KTM lost power, causing a crash involving Marquez and Di Giannantonio. The second red flag was triggered after a chaotic restart, which resulted in a three-rider pile-up involving Zarco, Bagnaia, and Marini.

Di Giannantonio expressed his concern for the safety of all riders, stating that “today has not been an easy day for everybody.” He also acknowledged the risks involved in the sport, saying “we try to give an amazing show, but also we are humans and we are in danger.”

The incident marked a significant setback for Acosta, who had been looking to secure his first MotoGP victory. Mir expressed sympathy for Zarco and Marquez, wishing them well for their recovery and hoping to see them at the next event.
