Ghana Premier League Team Bus Attacked, Player Killed

A Ghana Premier League footballer has been killed during an armed robbery on his club’s team bus as they returned from an away match in the country’s football association (GFA) confirmed on Monday.

The incident occurred on Sunday between Goaso and Bibiani, where Berekum Chelsea’s team bus was attacked by a group of masked men wielding guns and assault rifles. The driver attempted to reverse while under attack, prompting the players and staff to flee into nearby bushes for cover.

According to the club, 20-year-old Dominic Frimpong died as a result of the incident. The Ghanaian FA has expressed shock and sorrow over the player’s passing, describing him as “a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league.”

The GFA stated that it would strengthen security arrangements for clubs traveling for domestic competitions following this tragic incident. A similar attack occurred in 2023, when Legon Cities’ team bus was targeted after a game at Samartex, although no injuries were reported.

Details surrounding the incident are still emerging, but authorities have confirmed that Frimpong’s death is being investigated.
