US President Donald Trump has posted a social media message expressing support for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban ahead of Hungary’s upcoming parliamentary elections.
In a Truth Social post on Thursday, Trump praised Orban as a “truly strong and powerful leader” who fights tirelessly for his country. He drew parallels between himself and Orban, stating that they both pursue efforts to stop illegal immigration and ensure law and order.
Trump also mentioned that relations between Hungary and the United States have reached new heights of cooperation under his administration, largely thanks to Prime Minister Orban. The US president stated that he was proud to endorse Orban for re-election in 2022 and is honored to do so again.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been in office since 2010 and has faced criticism from human rights groups for democratic backsliding and hardline policies. Despite this, there have been growing signs of discontent with his government’s stance on issues such as asylum policies and LGBTQ+ rights.
A recent poll found that the centre-right Tisza party had a seven-point lead over Orban’s Fidesz alliance in the upcoming election. The poll results showed 35% support for Tisza, compared to 28% for Fidesz.
Trump has previously met with Orban on several occasions, including a visit to the White House in November and a meeting at the Davos conference in Switzerland. Trump has also expressed support for Orban’s stance on issues such as national sovereignty and immigration.
The endorsement from Trump is the latest example of the US president taking an active role in foreign elections.
