Drone strike on Sudan hospital kills at least 10 people

MSF Reports Drone Attack on Al Jabalain Hospital in White Nile State

A drone attack on Thursday targeted Al Jabalain Hospital in White Nile State, Sudan, resulting in damage to an operating theatre and a maternity ward. Medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) stated that the assault occurred during a children’s immunisation campaign.

According to MSF, at least 10 people were killed in the attack, including seven medical staff who had previously worked with the organization. The victims included some of those who had participated in previous campaigns with MSF.

The strikes are part of a series of attacks on healthcare facilities in Sudan, which have been ongoing since April 2023. A separate incident occurred on Thursday, targeting a medical supply depot in Rabak, the capital city of White Nile province.

According to local rights group Emergency Lawyers, there has been a recurring pattern of drone attacks by warring parties in various provinces since March. The World Health Organization reported that over 200 healthcare facilities have been targeted since the war began.

In response to the attack, Sudan’s Minister of Culture, Information, Antiquities and Tourism, Khalid Aleisir, condemned the incident and called for designating the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) a terrorist organization. He also stated that regional backers are directly responsible for perpetuating violence through military support.

Sudan Doctors Network described the attack as a “deliberate assault on health facilities and unarmed civilians” that further deteriorates the country’s already strained healthcare sector.
