Egypt Advances to Quarterfinals with 3-1 Win Over Benin
In a match played at Stade d’Agadir in Agadir, Morocco, Egypt secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations by defeating Benin 3-1. The game went into extra time after Benin’s Jodel Dossou equalized in the 83rd minute, leveling the score at 1-1.
Egypt dominated the match from the start but did not find the back of the net until the 69th minute when Marwan Attia scored. Attia was involved again in the seventh minute, heading Yasser Ibrahim’s cross into the top left corner to give Egypt a 2-0 lead. In extra time, Mohamed Salah sealed the win with a shot past Benin goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou from outside the penalty box.
Egypt will host Burkina Faso or Ivory Coast on Saturday in their quarterfinal match. Benin secured their spot in the last 16 with a single group stage victory over Botswana. The Pharaohs’ team will have an extra day of rest before facing their next opponents, as they bid for a record-extending eighth title.
Egypt’s Mohamed Hamdy suffered a serious left knee injury in the first half and was forced to leave the game. Benin’s Dokou Dodo continued playing after colliding with Hamdy, while Egypt’s goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy made several key saves throughout the match. The winner of this match will face Algeria or Congo in the quarterfinals.
