Senegal to Face Egypt in Africa Cup of Nations Semifinals

The African Football Confederation (CAF) Africa Cup of Nations will continue on Wednesday with the highly anticipated semifinal match between Senegal and Egypt at the Ibn Batouta Stadium in Tangier, Morocco. The match is scheduled to start at 6pm GMT.

Egypt, led by star forward Mohamed Salah, are seeking a record-extending eighth continental title. Salah has previously won major honors with Liverpool, including the Premier League and Champions League titles, but Africa’s most coveted prize has eluded him. Egypt have been pre-tournament favorites, boasting a strong squad featuring players such as Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Senegal, ranked 19th in the world, have reached the semifinals for the third time in four editions. The team features talented players like Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly, who have contributed to their success in the group stage and round of 16. Senegal finished top of Group D with seven points and beat Sudan 3-1 in the round of 16.

Egypt also enjoyed a strong group stage performance, finishing top of Group B with seven points. They defeated Benin 3-1 in the round of 16 before knocking out Ivory Coast 3-2 in a thrilling quarterfinal. The winner of this match will face the victor of the second semifinal between Nigeria and host nation Morocco.

The two teams have met 15 times in previous encounters, with Egypt holding a slight edge in the head-to-head record. Senegal’s best result at the tournament was their maiden championship title in AFCON 2021 in Cameroon.
