Elon Musk’s Lawsuit Against OpenAI Enters Closing Arguments
A landmark trial involving Elon Musk, the founder of rival AI model Grok, and OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, has reached its closing arguments. The lawsuit, filed by Musk, alleges that OpenAI breached its charitable trust and prioritized profit over AI safety and nonprofit values.
During the final statements, lawyers for both sides presented their cases to a jury. Steven Molo, representing Musk, accused OpenAI of breaching its charitable trust by enriching investors and insiders at the nonprofit’s expense. He also questioned the credibility of CEO Sam Altman, citing testimony from five witnesses who described him as untrustworthy.
In response, OpenAI’s lawyers argued that Musk waited too long to claim the company breached its founding agreement. They suggested that Musk himself was unreliable, pointing out that his testimony contradicted other witness statements and documents. The defense team also claimed that by 2017, everyone associated with OpenAI knew it needed more money to fulfill its mission than it could raise as a nonprofit.
The jury will now decide whether the lawsuit was filed within the statute of limitations and whether OpenAI had a “charitable trust” that was violated. If the jury finds in favor of Musk, they must determine whether OpenAI’s executives and investors acted unethically.
The trial comes as OpenAI prepares for an initial public offering (IPO) expected to be one of the largest ever. The outcome of this lawsuit could have significant implications for the future of AI development and its impact on society.
