A Lawsuit Filed Against xAI Over AI-Generated Deepfake Images
Ashley St Clair, a writer and political commentator, has filed a lawsuit against xAI, an artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk’s son, alleging that its Grok chatbot generated sexually-exploitative deepfake images of her. The lawsuit claims that the images caused her “pain and mental distress” and were distributed on X, a social media platform hosted by xAI.
The lawsuit was filed in New York City just before California Attorney General Rob Bonta sent a cease-and-desist letter to xAI, demanding that it stop creating and distributing nonconsensual sexualized imagery. The letter stated that the reports detailing this material were “shocking” and potentially illegal.
St Clair reported the images to X after they began appearing last year, requesting their removal. However, the platform initially replied that the images did not violate its policies, and later promised not to allow images of her to be used or altered without consent. Despite this, St Clair’s premium X subscription was removed, and she continued to see degrading fake images of herself.
xAI has countersued St Clair in federal court in Texas, alleging that she violated the terms of her xAI user agreement by filing a lawsuit in New York. The company is seeking an undisclosed monetary judgment against her.
St Clair’s lawyer, Carrie Goldberg, described the countersuit as “jolting” and stated that her client would vigorously defend herself in court. St Clair has also spoken out about the issue, saying that it is not just about her but about building systems that can produce nonconsensual sexually explicit images without repercussions.
The incident has sparked an international backlash against Grok, with authorities in several countries, including the United Kingdom, Japan, and India, investigating xAI over its creation of explicit deepfake images.
