Gulf Oil and Gas Facilities Targeted in Ongoing Conflict
Attacks on oil and gas facilities in the Gulf region have been ongoing since the start of the war in Iran. The conflict escalated after Israel launched airstrikes against Iran’s energy facilities, prompting Iran to increase its retaliatory attacks on neighboring countries.
The damage caused by these attacks has been substantial, with significant repairs needed to restore operations. However, the long-term consequences of this escalation are also being felt, as Qatar has warned of potential reductions in oil exports.
Energy exports from the Gulf region account for approximately one-fifth of global output, making the situation a concern for experts. The risks associated with turning energy facilities into battlefields are significant.
Former Iranian ambassador to the UK Mohsen Baharvand and research associate at MIT’s security studies programme Jim Walsh will discuss the implications of this escalation. Chief economist at the Gulf Research Center John Sfakianakis will also provide insight into the potential economic consequences.
The discussion will examine the dangers of this situation, with a focus on the impact on global energy markets and the region’s economy.
