England Secures Top Spot in Group 2 at T20 World Cup with Four-Wicket Win Against New Zealand
In a closely contested match, England secured their spot at the top of Group 2 at the T20 World Cup with a four-wicket win against New Zealand. The result leaves New Zealand awaiting Pakistan’s final match at this stage.
The Super Eights stage has already seen Sri Lanka eliminated from the tournament. On Saturday, host Pakistan will face off against Sri Lanka in Pallekele.
England’s victory was led by Player of the Match Will Jacks, who played a crucial role in chasing down New Zealand’s 159-7 total at R Premadasa Stadium on Friday. The match saw an early loss for England’s openers Phil Salt and Jos Buttler, which put their chances of winning in doubt.
However, captain Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell fell in the space of eight runs to leave England 58-4 in the ninth inning. Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed then formed an unbeaten seventh-wicket partnership of 44 to secure the win for England.
Earlier, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and elected to bat first, knowing a win would earn them the second semifinal spot from Group 2. The match saw several key wickets fall for New Zealand, including those of Tim Seifert and Finn Allen.
England’s decision to recall Rehan Ahmed in place of Jamie Overton may have been questioned when the Kiwis reached 64-0 after 6.5 overs. However, Ahmed’s wrist-spin partner Adil Rashid stepped in to claim several wickets, including that of Rachin Ravindra.
The result leaves New Zealand awaiting Pakistan’s final match at this stage. For England to progress to the semifinals, they must secure a spot against South Africa or India, who have already qualified from Group 1 and Group 2 respectively.
