Ethiopias Peace Deal Faces Uncertainty Amid TPLFs Return to Power

Tigray’s Main Political Party Announces Plans to Reinstatute Government Assembly

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has announced that it is taking back control of the region’s government, effectively ending a peace deal between Ethiopia’s federal government and the northern region. The party made the announcement in a Facebook post on Sunday.

According to the statement, the central committee “has decided to reinstate the Tigray Government Assembly (parliament), which had been suspended in the name of peace”. The TPLF accused the federal government of violating the 2022 Pretoria Agreement, which ended the war between the two parties. It also alleged that the government was withholding funds to pay local civil servants.

The announcement has sparked concerns about a potential resumption of conflict in northern Ethiopia. Getachew Reda, the party’s former spokesman and an adviser to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, described the statement as “a clear repudiation” of the post-war structure created by the Pretoria Agreement.

The TPLF’s decision comes after clashes erupted in Tigray in January, resulting in one person being killed. The region is also facing humanitarian challenges due to funding shortfalls, with up to 80 percent of the population requiring emergency support.
