EU summons Russian envoys amid Kyiv threat escalations

EU Spokesperson Criticizes Russia’s Threats to Diplomats and Foreign Citizens

The European Union has condemned Russia’s warning to diplomats and foreign citizens to leave the Ukrainian capital ahead of renewed air strikes. Anitta Hipper, EU spokesperson, stated that this is an “unacceptable escalation” in a post on X. The charge d’affairs had been summoned by Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and the European Union, with Russia’s envoys being called to explain the situation.

On Monday, Moscow announced plans to launch more strikes on Kyiv following a barrage of drones and missiles that killed four people over the weekend. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his military to prepare options for retaliation in response to an attack on a vocational school in the Luhansk region last week. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the strikes will target Ukrainian military-industrial facilities, including decision-making centers and command posts.

In response to Russia’s warning, Germany’s Federal Foreign Office summoned its ambassador, stating that Moscow is resorting to “threats, terror & escalation”. Norway and the Netherlands also followed suit, summoning their Russian ambassadors. The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, reiterated that Washington remains ready to mediate between Russia and Ukraine as talks have stalled.

The situation in Ukraine remains unresolved, with no clear end to the conflict in sight. Diplomatic efforts continue, with the European Union and other countries condemning Russia’s actions and calling for a ceasefire.
