European Union Split Over Iran Response
A divide exists among European Union member states regarding how to respond to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Some countries are rallying behind the concept of mutual defense, while others have taken a more cautious approach.
Iran has issued warnings to European leaders against participating in the US and Israeli-led military action, which has destabilized the region and affected global economies. In contrast, many EU nations have condemned Iran’s retaliatory strikes on non-belligerents in the Gulf.
Notably, Germany has aligned itself with the US and Israel, stating that Iran is a “terrorist regime” responsible for decades of oppression. This stance diverges from the positions held by Spain and the UK, which have taken a more principled approach to the conflict.
Spain has refused to allow US military aircraft to operate on its soil, prompting a rebuke from US President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Germany has welcomed US goals, while the UK has allowed its military base in Cyprus to be used by US aircraft for defensive purposes.
The EU triad of Germany, the UK, and France had previously backed negotiations with Iran, despite the US’s unilateral withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal. Spain’s stance is seen as one of principle, with the country consistently calling for respect of international law in various conflicts.
In Ukraine, which has been invited to join the EU as a future member, the government has applauded the demise of Russia’s supplier of Shahed drones, which it had downed over its cities last year. The country is also planning to assist efforts to shoot down similar drones.
