European Citizens’ Initiative Seeks Suspension of EU-Israel Partnership
A petition calling for the suspension of the European Union’s partnership agreement with Israel has garnered over 457,000 signatures within its first month. The initiative, launched on January 13 as a formally registered European citizens’ initiative, aims to reach 1 million signatures from at least seven EU member states by January 13 next year.
The petition is based on Article 2 of the association agreement between the EU and Israel, which conditions the partnership on respect for human rights and international law. Signers argue that Israel’s actions in Gaza, including large-scale civilian killings, displacement, and destruction of hospitals and medical infrastructure, are in breach of this article.
Signatures have been collected from all 27 EU member states, with France accounting for nearly 45% of the total. The country has a history of mobilizing public support for human rights causes, as seen in its past demonstrations against Israel’s actions in Gaza.
The initiative is part of the EU’s democratic framework and is designed to translate public will into institutional review. To trigger formal consideration by the European Commission, the petition must reach 1 million signatures from at least seven EU member states.
As of Monday, the initiative had gathered 457,950 signatures, exceeding 45% of the required total in just one month. Other countries with significant participation include Spain, Italy, Belgium, Finland, Ireland, and Sweden.
The geographic spread of the petition is notable, with signatories coming from across the continent. The Netherlands, Poland, and Slovenia also have a substantial number of signatures, while smaller states such as Luxembourg and Portugal show visible participation. Germany, despite being the EU’s most populous member state, has gathered significantly fewer signatures than its national threshold.
The initiative’s progress highlights the growing momentum behind calls for suspension of the EU-Israel partnership.
