European Union and UK impose sanctions on Russia over child deportations

European Union and UK Impose Sanctions on Russian Institutions Over Alleged Child Deportation and Indoctrination

The European Union has announced measures targeting 23 state institutions and individuals accused of systematically deporting and indoctrinating Ukrainian children. The EU’s designations focus on programs involving patriotic events, ideological education, and military-oriented activities aimed at pro-Russian indoctrination.

As part of the sanctions, asset freezes and travel bans have been imposed on those involved in these programs. The UK has also unveiled a broader package targeting 85 people and entities, including institutions linked to Russia’s alleged campaign to forcibly deport and militarize Ukrainian children.

According to an EU statement, nearly 20,500 Ukrainian children have been deported or transferred since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The EU describes these actions as grave breaches of international law.

The sanctions were approved by the EU’s 27 nations in coordination with Canada and the UK. The measures aim to hold accountable those responsible for alleged child deportation and indoctrination.

Russian officials have denied taking children, claiming they are being moved away from front-line areas for their protection. However, an International Criminal Court arrest warrant was issued in 2023 for Russian President Vladimir Putin over the war crime of illegal deportation of children from Ukraine.

In response to the announced sanctions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that these actions target those who “rewire” the identity of Ukrainian children and help make them hate their homeland.
