EU Leaders Condemn Iranian Attacks on GCC Countries
European Union leaders held talks with Gulf Cooperation Council officials in Brussels on Thursday, where they expressed support for Arab countries in the region. The meeting came amid escalating tensions following recent attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran.
In a joint statement, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and other European leaders condemned “Iran’s actions against GCC countries” as “unjustifiable”. They called on Iran to cease its attacks immediately, stating that Gulf countries have the right to take necessary measures to defend their security and stability. The statement also reaffirmed the importance of regional and global security.
The talks took place amidst mounting concerns over the conflict, which has resulted in at least 1,230 deaths since Saturday, according to Iranian state media outlets. Israel has expanded its military campaign to Lebanon, while the US sank an Iranian frigate in international waters, killing dozens on board. Iran continues to fire at countries across the region, including Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
European countries have become increasingly involved in the conflict, with France and the UK announcing plans to send warships and air defense assets to Cyprus. Italy has also pledged to send naval assets to the island, along with the Netherlands and Spain. The UK, Greece, and Portugal have agreed to allow US military use of their bases under certain conditions, while Spain has refused.
The meeting in Brussels marked a show of support for Gulf countries from European leaders, who emphasized the need for de-escalation and mediation.
