Europol Cracks Europe-Wide Drug Ring in Record-Breaking Operation

European Police Crack Down on Synthetic Drug Production

A major operation targeting a network involved in manufacturing synthetic drugs has resulted in significant seizures and arrests across several European countries. Polish prosecutors announced that investigators had seized over 9.3 tonnes of narcotics and arrested more than 100 suspects as part of the coordinated effort.

The operation, which was led by Europol’s European Serious Organised Crime Centre, targeted a criminal network with connections to Central Europe and spanning the European Union. The investigation involved police from Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain.

According to Andy Kraag, head of Europol’s European Serious Organised Crime Centre, the operation dealt a “massive blow” to organised crime groups involved in drug trafficking. Kraag stated that this was the largest-ever operation against synthetic drug production and distribution.

The year-long investigation uncovered 24 industrial-scale labs, with approximately 1,000 tonnes of chemicals seized. The majority of those arrested were from Poland, but Belgian and Dutch nationals are also believed to have been involved. Laboratories and drug production lines were located in Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, and Poland.

The operation was part of a “supply-chain strategy” aimed at choking off the synthetic drug industry at its source. Kraag noted that the criminal groups’ supply chain has been disrupted, resulting in their inability to obtain chemicals.
