Families in Gaza City face Ramadan without homes after Israeli destruction

Gaza City Residents Struggle to Observe Ramadan Amid Ongoing Conflict

Nisreen Nassar and her family are among the many Palestinians living in schools and makeshift shelters in northern Gaza. The family, which includes seven children, has been displaced multiple times since Israel’s military campaign began in October 2023.

The United States-brokered “ceasefire” agreement came into effect four months ago, but Nassar’s family is still struggling to access basic necessities due to gas shortages. As a result, they are relying on humanitarian aid for their daily needs and have been unable to prepare meals to break their fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The Nassar family was forced to leave their home in Beit Hanoon, where they lived before the conflict began, and has since been relocated several times. They currently reside in an abandoned school in northern Gaza, which provides little shelter beyond its concrete walls.

According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, more than 600 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since the “ceasefire” agreement came into effect. The family’s only possessions are a few bags of clothes and thin blankets.

Nassar’s husband, Thaer, expressed concern about his children’s safety, stating that they are afraid to go outside due to Israeli gunfire. The family’s living situation is marked by uncertainty, as they wait for a decision on whether they can return home or to what remains of it.
