Father Found Guilty in Apalachee School Shooting Case

A jury in Georgia has convicted Colin Gray, the father of a school shooter, on all charges related to the attack at Apalachee High School in September 2024. The verdict came after less than two hours of deliberation.

Gray was found guilty of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter for his son’s actions, which resulted in the deaths of two students and two teachers, as well as injuries to seven others. His son, Colt Gray, was 14 years old at the time of the attack.

The charges against Gray included providing access to a gun and ammunition, which prosecutors argued enabled his son’s attack on the high school. Gray faced up to life in prison for his convictions.

Gray’s defense team had argued that he should not be held accountable for his son’s actions, citing his son’s mental health challenges as the primary cause of the shooting. However, prosecutors maintained that Gray had a responsibility to keep guns out of his son’s hands and prevent harm from occurring.

Colt Gray is also facing separate charges in connection with the attack, including 55 counts of malice murder and felony murder. His mother, Marcee Gray, testified in court that she had urged Colin Gray to take away the teenager’s guns before the shooting.

Gray was convicted on two counts of second-degree murder for the killings of students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, as well as two counts of involuntary manslaughter for the killings of teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie. He was also found guilty of reckless conduct.

The case is one of several recent instances in which parents have faced prison time for alleged negligence in the lead-up to a school shooting.
