FBI assumes lead role in Minneapolis ICE agent homicide investigation

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has assumed responsibility for the investigation into the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old mother of three who was shot dead by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis. According to Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), Superintendent Drew Evans, the BCA will no longer be involved in the investigation.

The decision comes after the US attorney’s office changed its agreement with the BCA, which had previously agreed to investigate the shooting. Evans stated that the FBI would now lead the investigation and that the BCA would not have access to case materials, scene evidence, or investigative interviews necessary to complete a thorough investigation.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has expressed concerns about the transfer of responsibility for the investigation, stating that state authorities could still investigate with or without federal cooperation. Ellison also mentioned that state charges were possible based on the available evidence.

The shooting occurred in a residential neighborhood and involved an unidentified ICE agent who shot Good, a US citizen. The incident has sparked controversy, with differing accounts from state and federal officials. According to eyewitnesses, two masked officers approached Good’s car, which was stopped on a street, and one of them fired three shots while the vehicle was moving.

The incident has led to widespread protests across the United States, with demonstrators condemning the ICE agent’s actions and the wider ICE presence in cities such as Minneapolis, New York City, Seattle, and Los Angeles. The protests have been met with a strong police response, including the use of pepper balls and tear gas.

As the investigation continues, the FBI has taken over responsibility for the case, while state authorities continue to consider possible charges against the ICE agent involved in the shooting.
