US Senate Official Blocks Republican Funding Proposal for White House Security Upgrades
A senior United States Senate official has ruled that a proposed funding measure for security upgrades linked to President Donald Trump’s planned White House ballroom does not comply with the chamber’s budget rules. The ruling, made by Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough, has blocked Republicans’ efforts to allocate $1 billion in public funds for the project.
According to a Democratic lawmaker, the proposal was included in a spending bill aimed at upgrading security measures tied to the ballroom and other planned underground facilities. However, MacDonough determined that the funding could not be passed under the fast-track budget process being used by Republicans.
The ruling has significant implications for the Republican-led Senate, which holds a 53-47 majority. Democrats would need to secure enough support from their colleagues to override the ruling, but it is unclear whether they have sufficient backing.
The disputed funding is part of a larger $72 billion spending package focused on immigration enforcement. Republicans had hoped to pass the bill without Democratic support, but the ruling has added an additional layer of complexity to the process.
President Trump had previously stated that the ballroom would be funded through private donations totaling $400 million. However, Republicans had sought to include the security funding in the spending bill. The project is expected to be completed by September 2028, towards the end of Trump’s second term in office.
