Federal Reserve Chairman Powell to Attend Supreme Court Hearing on Cook Case

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to Attend Supreme Court Oral Argument

US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will attend an oral argument at the Supreme Court on Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the matter. The high court is considering a case involving the attempted firing of Fed Governor Lisa Cook.

The Supreme Court’s consideration of this case comes as President Donald Trump has threatened to indict Fed Chair Powell, according to a recent announcement by the Trump administration. This development marks a significant escalation in tensions between the executive and legislative branches.

Powell was appointed to his position by Trump in 2018. In January, he issued a video statement condemning the subpoenas sent by the Trump administration as “pretexts” for their efforts to influence the Fed’s monetary policy decisions. The Fed has lowered interest rates three times since last year, with the current rate standing at approximately 3.6 percent.

The Trump administration has accused Cook of mortgage fraud, an allegation that she has denied. Cook is currently suing to keep her job on the Fed’s governing board. A brief order issued by the Supreme Court on October 1 allowed her to remain on the board while the court considers her case.

Powell’s attendance at the oral argument suggests a more public show of support for Cook than previously seen. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for the Fed’s decision-making process, particularly if Trump were to succeed in removing Cook from her position.
