FIFA Chief Infantino Confirms Irans Participation in World Cup

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will participate in the 2026 World Cup, despite the country’s absence from the recent governing body congress. The decision comes amid tensions and challenges surrounding the tournament, which is cohosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
Iran had qualified for the tournament, but its participation has been complicated since the US-Israeli war on the country. Tehran requested alternative venues for matches on US soil, but FIFA rejected the request, insisting that the schedule would stand.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated last week that Washington had no objections to Iranian players participating in the World Cup, but added that they would not be allowed to bring people with ties to the IRGC. Infantino reiterated that Iran will play in the United States, citing the need for unity and cooperation.
Iranian football federation officials, including President Mehdi Taj, were scheduled to attend the congress but turned back at Toronto airport after being denied entry into Canada. Canadian immigration authorities cited concerns about individuals linked to the IRGC, which Ottawa designates as a terrorist organization.
A source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters that two members of the delegation could have attended the congress but chose not to due to difficulties in obtaining entry into Canada. Taj is a former member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Outside the convention centre, protesters gathered to voice their opposition to the Iranian government and support for regime change. The protesters chanted slogans, including “IRGC is terrorists” and “No deal with terrorists.”
