FIFA President Defends World Cup Ticket Prices Amid Criticism
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has defended the high ticket prices for the upcoming World Cup in the United States, citing laws that allow tickets to be resold at significantly higher prices than face value. Speaking at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills on Tuesday, Infantino stated that the eye-watering prices reflect demand for the tournament.
FIFA has faced criticism from fans and fan organizations over the cost of World Cup tickets, with some labeling the pricing structure as “extortionate” and a “monumental betrayal.” In response, Infantino explained that FIFA is obligated to take advantage of laws in the US that permit ticket resales at higher prices.
According to Infantino, if tickets are listed for resale at high prices, it does not necessarily mean that the original face value price was inflated. He also stated that even if fans purchase tickets at high prices, they may still be resold at an even higher price on the secondary market.
FIFA received over 500 million ticket requests for the 2026 World Cup, compared to fewer than 50 million combined for the previous two tournaments. Infantino noted that 25% of group-phase tickets were priced under $300, which is comparable to the cost of attending a college game or top professional sports event.
Despite struggling to sell out games, including host nation USA’s opener against Paraguay, seats remain available at exorbitant prices. Tickets for the match start at $1,120 and can go as high as $4,105, with some tickets priced around $2,000.
