FIFA extends ban to World Cup for Prestianni, potentially missing Argentina games

FIFA Extends Gianluca Prestianni’s Suspension to Global Scope

Gianluca Prestianni, an Argentine winger for SL Benfica, may be forced to miss his country’s first two World Cup group games if he is selected for the squad. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has extended Prestianni’s six-game suspension, originally imposed by UEFA, to have a worldwide effect.

According to Article 70 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the sanction was extended in accordance with the governing body’s regulations. The ban covers UEFA club competition games and competitive international matches, but not friendlies or domestic league games.

Prestianni was initially banned by UEFA following accusations that he directed a slur at Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr during February’s Champions League playoff clash. He had already served a one-match provisional suspension when he missed the second leg against Real Madrid. The 20-year-old has limited international experience, having made only one appearance for Argentina as a late substitute in a November friendly against Angola.

Argentina is set to open their World Cup campaign on June 16 against Group J opponents Algeria before taking on Austria and Jordan. If Prestianni is selected for the squad, he may be required to serve the extended suspension, potentially missing his country’s first two group games.
