FIFA introduces new World Cup rule to limit yellow card suspensions

FIFA Announces Changes to Yellow Card Rules for 2026 World Cup

FIFA has made changes to its yellow card rules for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, aimed at reducing suspensions during key elimination games. According to a statement released by the organization’s ruling council, single yellow cards will be cancelled after the group stage and again after the quarterfinals.

The change reflects the expanded format of the tournament, which includes an extra knockout round. As part of this adjustment, players who receive a single yellow card during the group stage will have their disciplinary records cleared, allowing them to start the knockout phase fresh.

Additionally, FIFA has proposed an amnesty for players who received one yellow card in the previous three knockout rounds and whose teams advanced to the semifinals. This second amnesty will apply after the quarterfinals.

The organization has also announced an increase in financial resources to be distributed to participating teams. The new figures include a 15% increase in total funding, with each of the 48 participating teams receiving $18m. This includes increases in preparation money and qualification money.

The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
