FIFA Reverses Decision on Tailgating for US World Cup Matches at Gillette Stadium
The Boston World Cup host committee has announced that fans attending matches at Gillette Stadium will be allowed to tailgate for all seven games. The decision was made in accordance with local policies, which permit tailgating “like any other event hosted at the stadium.” This change comes after an initial statement from FIFA prohibiting tailgating at all World Cup matches.
The stadium, rebranded as the Boston Stadium during the tournament, will host five group-stage matches, one round-of-32 match, and a quarterfinal match. However, space for tailgating will be limited, with only about 5,000 parking spots available for public use compared to approximately 20,000 for Patriots games.
Transportation options are also being offered, including a train service from Boston to Foxborough at $80 per round trip, four times the usual fare. An express bus option is also available, departing from various Boston-area locations at $95 per round trip.
In other news, New York City has announced plans for fan festivals in each of its five boroughs, held in conjunction with World Cup matches at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The USA will begin their World Cup campaign against Paraguay on June 12 at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
The Gillette Stadium will host a total of seven matches during the tournament, including five group-stage games and two knockout stage matches.
