FIFAs Infantino Downplays World Cup Concerns Amid Violence in Mexico

FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed confidence in Mexico’s ability to host the 2026 World Cup despite recent violence. The comments came during a visit to Colombia, where Infantino stated that he was “very reassured” about the situation.

Mexico is one of three countries hosting the tournament, along with the United States and Canada. The country has experienced violence in recent days, following the killing of a high-ranking member of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). At least 74 people were killed during an operation to capture the cartel leader, Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera.

The violence led to clashes between security forces and suspected cartel members, resulting in the destruction of property and vehicles. Residents and tourists reported feeling unsafe, with some describing the situation as a “war zone.” However, FIFA has not commented on the matter.

Infantino’s optimism was tempered by comments from other organizations. The Portuguese Football Federation expressed concerns about the safety of players and coaches, citing security considerations as their top priority. In contrast, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum assured that there was no risk to World Cup fans and that the situation was returning to normal.

Guadalajara, one of the host cities for the tournament, will host four group-stage matches, while Mexico City and Monterrey will also host games. The Jalisco Governor has ruled out the possibility of Guadalajara being dropped from the tournament due to security concerns.
