Fire destroys 200 homes in Sabah, displacing hundreds of residents

Malaysia’s Sabah State Hit by Devastating Fire, Displacing Hundreds

A fire that broke out on Sunday morning in Sandakan district, Sabah state, Malaysia has displaced approximately 445 people, according to unofficial figures from the temporary relief centre in Sandakan. The fire destroyed around 200 homes, primarily wooden structures built on stilts.

According to Jimmy Lagung, the district’s fire and rescue chief, strong winds and low tide conditions contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. “Strong winds and the close proximity of the houses caused the fire to spread rapidly,” he stated.

The affected area is home to a water village, which features wooden houses built on stilts and is inhabited by some of Malaysia’s poorest communities, including stateless and indigenous groups. The examination of the village found that the homes are no longer safe for residents.

Datuk Walter Kenson, head of the Sandakan District Disaster Management Committee, confirmed that an assessment was conducted to determine the safety of the affected residents’ homes. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the federal government is coordinating with Sabah authorities to provide basic assistance and temporary relocation for those displaced by the fire.

The priority at present is ensuring the safety of the victims and providing immediate aid on the ground.
